Cling Film and Health Risks: What You Should Know
Cling film (also called plastic wrap or food wrap) is designed to keep food fresh and prevent contamination. The important question is not simply whether plastic touches food, but what the film is made from, what chemicals it contains, and how it is used.

Glass containers are excellent for refrigerator and freezer storage and can be particularly convenient for leftovers.
Stainless-steel containers are another durable option, especially for foods that don’t need to be microwaved.
Ceramic or glass dishes with reusable covers can replace plastic wrap for many everyday applications.
Silicone food covers can also reduce the need for disposable plastic wrap, although they are still food-contact materials and should be used according to their manufacturer’s temperature and food-contact instructions.
The goal doesn’t have to be eliminating every plastic product. Reducing unnecessary exposure—particularly unnecessary heating of plastics—is a more practical approach.

The FDA continues to regulate food-contact substances and reassess chemicals when new information becomes available. Its current work on phthalates demonstrates that the agency is actively examining whether existing food-contact uses remain appropriately assessed.
Similarly, EFSA explains that chemicals can migrate from food-contact materials into food and that safety assessments consider migration and toxicological data. European food-contact rules require that foreseeable transfer of substances does not create a safety concern.
Bottom line
You don’t need to throw away all your cling film. For normal storage using food-grade film according to its instructions, there isn’t evidence that ordinary use is inherently dangerous.
