Turmeric-Ginger Tonic
A bright, warming drink made with fresh ginger, turmeric, lemon, black pepper, and honey. It’s easy to make as a concentrated tonic or dilute it with more water for a milder drink.
Ingredients — 2 servings
- 2 cups (480 ml) water
- 1½-inch (about 30–35 g) piece fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced or grated
- 1-inch (about 15–20 g) piece fresh turmeric, peeled and grated
- Or use 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- ½ lemon, juiced
- ⅛ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1–2 teaspoons honey, maple syrup, or another sweetener, to taste
- Optional: ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Optional: a small pinch of cayenne for extra heat
Method
- Prepare the ginger and turmeric.
Peel the ginger and turmeric. Grate them finely, or slice the ginger and turmeric into thin pieces. Fresh turmeric can stain cutting boards and hands, so use care. - Simmer the spices.
Add the water, ginger, turmeric, and optional cinnamon to a small saucepan. - Heat gently.
Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat and simmer for 8–10 minutes. Avoid a vigorous boil, which can make the drink taste harsher. - Strain.
Remove from the heat and strain through a fine-mesh strainer into a mug or heatproof measuring cup. Press the ginger and turmeric with the back of a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible. - Add lemon and pepper.
Let the tonic cool for a minute or two, then stir in the lemon juice and black pepper. - Sweeten.
Add honey or maple syrup to taste. Honey dissolves particularly well while the tonic is still warm. - Taste and adjust.
- Too strong → add warm water.
- Too spicy → add more honey and lemon.
- Too earthy → add more lemon.
- Want more heat → add a little cayenne or extra ginger.
How to serve
Warm: Drink immediately, like herbal tea.
Iced: Let it cool completely, then pour over ice. Add a splash of sparkling water for a refreshing tonic.
Concentrated: Reduce the water to about 1 cup and make a stronger 2-serving concentrate. Dilute with warm or cold water when serving.
Why the ingredients are commonly used
- Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound studied for its anti-inflammatory activity.
- Ginger contains bioactive compounds such as gingerols and is traditionally used for digestion and nausea.
- Black pepper contains piperine, which can increase curcumin absorption.
- Lemon contributes acidity and vitamin C while balancing turmeric’s earthy flavor.
- Honey adds sweetness and makes the tonic more pleasant to drink.
One important distinction: this can be a nutritious, flavorful drink, but it shouldn’t be considered a treatment for inflammation or a substitute for medical care.
