The vitamin most important to check: Vitamin B12
If you have a B12 deficiency, correcting it can be very important for nerve health. B12 deficiency can cause numbness, tingling, balance problems and other neurological symptoms, and untreated deficiency can sometimes cause permanent nerve damage.
However, improvement isn’t necessarily immediate. Some nerve symptoms can take months to improve, and some may not completely disappear if the nerve has been damaged for a long time.
Be careful with Vitamin B6
This is especially important: don’t assume that a high-dose B-complex is better for nerve problems.
Too much vitamin B6 from supplements can actually cause peripheral nerve damage, producing tingling, numbness and sensory problems.
So I would not recommend taking large doses of B6 to treat nerve inflammation.
What actually causes “inflamed nerves”?
Peripheral neuropathy can result from diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, autoimmune diseases, infections, nerve compression/injury, certain medications, alcohol, thyroid/kidney problems and other conditions.
If the neuropathy is genuinely caused by an autoimmune/inflammatory condition, treatment may involve medicines such as corticosteroids, IVIG or other immune-directed treatments—not simply vitamins.
What I’d do instead of a “7-day vitamin cure”
If you’re experiencing burning, tingling, numbness, electric-shock sensations or weakness, a clinician can investigate the cause. Depending on your symptoms, testing may include:
- Vitamin B12
- Blood glucose/HbA1c for diabetes
- Thyroid function
- Kidney/metabolic tests
- Other vitamin or nutritional tests when appropriate
- Neurological examination and, when indicated, nerve-conduction/EMG testing
Seek prompt medical attention if you have rapidly worsening weakness, difficulty walking, loss of bladder/bowel control, severe new numbness, or symptoms affecting breathing/swallowing.
If you tell me where the nerve symptoms are (feet, hands, back, neck, face, etc.), what they feel like, how long you’ve had them, your age, and whether you have diabetes or take any vitamins/medications, I can explain the most likely causes and which vitamins/lab tests are actually relevant.
