I Went to the Store and Bought Some Bacon (Crispy Pan-Fried Bacon)
This simple recipe focuses on cooking bacon until it’s perfectly crispy while keeping it flavorful and easy to prepare.
Ingredients
- 8 slices of bacon (thick-cut or regular)
- Freshly ground black pepper (optional)
- Maple syrup or brown sugar (optional, for a sweet glaze)
Equipment
- Large skillet or frying pan
- Tongs
- Paper towel-lined plate
- Splatter screen (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Pan
- Place the bacon strips in a cold skillet in a single layer.
- Avoid overlapping the slices so they cook evenly.
Step 2: Cook Slowly
- Turn the heat to medium-low.
- As the pan heats, the bacon fat will slowly render out.
- Cook for 8–12 minutes, turning the bacon every 2–3 minutes.
Step 3: Crisp the Bacon
- Continue cooking until the bacon reaches your preferred texture:
- Chewy: 8–10 minutes
- Crispy: 10–15 minutes
- Lower the heat if the bacon starts browning too quickly.
Step 4: Optional Glaze
- During the last minute of cooking, brush the bacon lightly with:
- Maple syrup, or
- Sprinkle a little brown sugar.
- Cook for about 30–60 seconds per side until caramelized.
Step 5: Drain
- Transfer the bacon to a plate lined with paper towels.
- Let it rest for 2 minutes before serving.
Tips
- Save the rendered bacon fat in a heatproof jar for cooking eggs, potatoes, or vegetables.
- Don’t overcrowd the pan; cook in batches if necessary.
- For less splatter, use a splatter screen or partially cover the pan.
