Onion powder is sometimes used in DIY skincare because onions contain sulfur compounds and antioxidants. However, there is limited scientific evidence that onion powder itself provides major skin benefits, and it can irritate sensitive skin. It’s a good idea to do a patch test on a small area of skin first.
Simple Onion Powder Face Mask
Ingredients
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 tablespoon plain yogurt
1 teaspoon honey
Directions
1. Mix the onion powder, yogurt, and honey into a smooth paste.
2. Apply a thin layer to clean skin, avoiding the eyes and lips.
3. Leave on for 10–15 minutes.
4. Rinse with lukewarm water and gently pat dry.
5. Apply a moisturizer afterward.
How often to use
Start with once a week.
If your skin tolerates it well, you can use it up to twice weekly.
For Spot Treatment
Some people use onion-based preparations on small acne marks or scars.
Ingredients
½ teaspoon onion powder
A few drops of water or honey
Directions
1. Mix into a thick paste.
2. Apply only to the affected area.
3. Leave for 5–10 minutes.
4. Rinse thoroughly.
Precautions
Stop using it if you experience burning, significant redness, swelling, or itching.
Avoid using on broken, irritated, or sunburned skin.
Be especially cautious if you have eczema, rosacea, or very sensitive skin.
Onion powder near the eyes can cause significant irritation.
If your goal is acne, dark spots, skin brightening, or scars, I can suggest options with stronger evidence and tailor them to your skin type.
