If you’re looking for a simple home remedy that may help loosen mucus, one common recipe uses honey and ginger. While it won’t “clear your lungs” or cure a respiratory illness, warm fluids, honey, and ginger may help soothe the throat and make mucus easier to cough up.
2-Ingredient Honey & Ginger Drink
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated (or thinly sliced)
- 1 tablespoon honey
Optional (not counted as an ingredient):
- 1 cup hot water
Instructions
- Grate or thinly slice the fresh ginger.
- Place the ginger in a cup and pour 1 cup of hot (not boiling) water over it.
- Let it steep for 5–10 minutes.
- Strain out the ginger if desired.
- Stir in 1 tablespoon of honey once the drink has cooled slightly (to help preserve the honey’s flavor and properties).
- Sip slowly while warm.
How often?
- You can drink this 1–3 times a day as needed for throat irritation or congestion.
What the ingredients may do
- Ginger: May have mild anti-inflammatory effects and can help some people feel relief from cold symptoms.
- Honey: Can soothe a sore throat and may reduce coughing in adults and children over 1 year old.
Important notes
- Do not give honey to babies under 1 year of age due to the risk of infant botulism.
- If you have a persistent cough lasting more than 3 weeks, cough up blood, have chest pain, difficulty breathing, or a high fever, seek medical evaluation promptly.
- If you have asthma, COPD, pneumonia, or another lung condition, home remedies should not replace prescribed treatment.
This drink may help with symptom relief, but there is no scientific evidence that any two-ingredient recipe can “clean” or “detox” the lungs. Your lungs naturally clear mucus through normal defense mechanisms, and staying well hydrated can also help keep mucus thinner and easier to expel.
