A Classic Tomato Sandwich is all about ripe, juicy tomatoes, good bread, and a generous layer of mayonnaise. It’s simple, but using high-quality ingredients makes a big difference.
Classic Tomato Sandwich
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: Optional 2–4 minutes (if toasting bread)
Servings: 2 sandwiches
Ingredients
- 4 slices of sturdy white bread, sourdough, or whole wheat
- 2 large ripe tomatoes (such as beefsteak or heirloom), sliced ¼-inch (6 mm) thick
- 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons softened unsalted butter (optional, for extra richness)
- Salt, to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 4–6 fresh basil leaves or a few lettuce leaves (optional)
Optional Add-Ins
- 2 slices cheddar, provolone, or mozzarella cheese
- Thinly sliced red onion
- Avocado slices
- A pinch of smoked paprika
- Everything bagel seasoning
- A few drops of hot sauce
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Tomatoes
- Wash and dry the tomatoes.
- Slice them into even rounds.
- Lay the slices on paper towels.
- Sprinkle lightly with salt.
- Let them sit for 5–10 minutes to draw out excess moisture.
- Pat dry gently with another paper towel.
Tip: This prevents the sandwich from becoming soggy.
Step 2: Prepare the Bread
You have two options:
Soft Version
- Use fresh, soft bread.
Toasted Version
- Toast until lightly golden for extra crunch.
Step 3: Spread the Condiments
Spread mayonnaise generously on one side of each slice of bread.
For extra richness:
- Spread a thin layer of butter first, then the mayonnaise.
Step 4: Assemble
- Arrange the tomato slices in a slightly overlapping layer.
- Sprinkle with:
- Salt
- Freshly ground black pepper
- Add basil or lettuce if using.
- Add cheese or onion if desired.
- Top with the second slice of bread, mayonnaise side facing the tomatoes.
Step 5: Serve
Slice in half and serve immediately before the bread absorbs too much tomato juice.
Flavor Tips
- Use tomatoes that are fully ripe but still firm.
- Season the tomatoes directly instead of only seasoning the sandwich.
- Use full-fat mayonnaise for the best flavor.
- Freshly cracked black pepper tastes noticeably better than pre-ground.
- If using heirloom tomatoes, mix different colors for extra flavor and presentation.
