The claim “Orchids: 1 tablespoon is enough, and they will bloom non-stop” is a common gardening headline, but it is misleading. There is no single ingredient that makes orchids bloom continuously.
If the “1 tablespoon” refers to a homemade fertilizer (such as rice water, cinnamon, coffee grounds, banana peel, or baking soda), the evidence is limited, and some of these can even harm orchids if overused.
For healthy orchids, especially Phalaenopsis orchid, these practices are much more reliable:
- Light: Provide bright, indirect sunlight. Too little light is one of the most common reasons orchids don’t rebloom.
- Water: Water when the potting mix is nearly dry, usually every 7–10 days, depending on temperature and humidity.
- Fertilizer: Use a balanced orchid fertilizer at about one-quarter to one-half the recommended strength every 2–4 weeks during active growth.
- Potting mix: Grow orchids in a bark-based orchid mix rather than regular soil.
- Temperature: Many orchids benefit from slightly cooler nighttime temperatures, which can encourage flowering.
