A very dirty mop can usually be brought back to life with a strong disinfecting soak, not just a “drop” of something.
The most effective and commonly used options are:
1. Bleach (most powerful)
Add about 1/4 cup of household bleach to a bucket of warm water and soak the mop head for 10–15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
- This kills bacteria and removes grime buildup.
- Don’t mix bleach with anything else.
2. White vinegar (milder option)
Use about 1 cup of white vinegar in warm water and soak for 30–60 minutes.
- Helps remove odor, loosen dirt, and break down residue.
- Less harsh than bleach, but also less disinfecting power.
3. Baking soda + vinegar combo (for smell + grease)
Soak in hot water with a few tablespoons of baking soda, then rinse and follow with a vinegar soak.
If the mop is very old, stiff, or permanently discolored, cleaning may restore hygiene but not full “like new” softness.
One practical note: if it still smells bad after a proper bleach soak and rinse, it’s usually cheaper and safer to replace it.
